put the generator gas in wrong hole now what, without gas I can't get the generator to work do I have to start over?

The game won't let you put anything in the wrong place, so if it's no longer in your inventory and it went into the generator, then it went into the right place, even if you didn't place your cursor directly over the funnel. Some games make you place the cursor exactly where the item needs to go. Others games, as this one, as long as you're in the general area, it will accept it.
