Too violent? Please...(spoilers)

[Post New]by Masquerade32 on Nov 12, 08 1:40 PM
As much as I hate asking personal questions on a forum I haven't posted on for a while, I have to wonder how old some of Redrum's players are. Going beyond the complaints of "too short" "too boring" "too repetitive" or simple "it's lame"s, I'm hearing players quit as soon as the intro animations have finished because it's "too scary" "too violent" "I don't like seeing a little girl being tormented/having her head cut open/given shots".

I can understand as far as the hobby player is concerned; Redrum is aguably the most extreme game BFG has to offer (it's the first game I've seen them give a warning to younger gamers). But someone complaining should have known what they were getting themselves into. True, I don't like seeing children being tormented/tortured, but there were no such images in the game and most of these visable "acts of violence" were visions. The head getting cut open? A vision, although later in the game there are talks of a lobotomy that will be performed. The shot? Never physically shown. And while a little girl in a straight jacket is upsetting, it's no form of tormenting.

And to completely jump to conclusions, I have to wonder what other games besides hobby games these whining players play. In the overall game market, there are much more violent and traumatic games out there on consoles and the PC, though I promise not to name names. For example, there's a town on a Hill that's gone Silent. I've read a Bio of a game that gave me Shock. Very reciently a game was released of Dead things in Space, and hearing some of the nasty things in that game made Redrum look like a declawed cat. There are also lots of violent movies that would make Redrum stand in the corner for not being scary enough.

In conclusion, the warnings were everywhere. "Help Rose battle an evil doctor" "Rose sees dead people. Unfortunantly, her visions have landed her in an asylum" "solve a series of grizzly murders" and finally "Warning: Redrum is an intense psychological murder mystery intended for mature audiences." Aguments over the gameplay are another topic. Anyone appalled by the content knew what they were getting themselves into, and if that's all they had to complain about I feel very sorry for them for missing out on an overall fantastic story and intriguing game that I've wanted to see on BFG for years.

I agree. I also thought it was good. I wouldn't mind playing another one.
And the warning is in red and I don't believe the buyer could miss it.

I have to agree too. Now, if I had a small child in the house that "wanted to play games with mommy"..then, I would just select a different game. Actually, I did play this game with my daughter(we take turns clicking) and we had a great time! (OK- She is 21yrs old, divorced and just moved back in with me)
I would like to see more games like this on BF. Besides, I am sure that the majority of BF players are adults.
My 17yr old son wouldn't play a BF game if you paid him. He plays the real "violent" ones. and he will be 18 in a few months- I can't stop him. Now we have talked during his teen yrs and when I first bought him games for his game systems, I was VERY careful. But hell... he will be old enough to join the Army and go to war, then he is old enough to select what he wants to play.

I CAN NOT STAND the "opinionated" people on this site. It wasn't like that a few yrs ago, then they opened the forums to the public. There were members(including myself initially) that never knew BF had forums. And getting into them wasn't easy until you knew how to.. it was a puzzle in itself. Anyway Kudos to both you guys!

Thank you for posting this. I too read the write up for the game and paused before clicking the try it now button due to the fact that I do have smaller children that like to play with me.
Your opinion was exactly what I need to hear to come to an informed decission.

You are right in stating the warning is there for all to see.

I loved the game so much that I was disappointed when it ended. I sent an email to the makers of the game to ask them why it ended the way it did. They said that they are working on a continuation to finish the story.

As far as comments on this forum, I find it comical that anyone would complain about this game being too scary. If you can't read the warnings then obviousy you just need to stick with the slots on BFG. I too think that BFG should have more games like this.

Kudos, BFG for bringing us this game!

HI Masquerade...and welcome to some of you ..fairly new fish in the pond. We love to hear everyone's comments. May I just say that the fish in the pond tend to not use words like they and them.. less accusations and more creative suggestions. It makes more friends in the pond. I truly understand your point of view, and you make some wonderful points and suggestions. Gosh you almost have me wanting to try it..although the game's own disclaimers tended to tell me..not for me.

Just keep in mind that we are ALL playing for fun...not serious competition. I just want everyone to have fun in the pond; have great conversations..and try to ..maybe not so judgemental. If you reworded you comments, I'll bet you'd have tons of BG regulars very interested in your thoughts. We are one big happy fish family....Again. Welcome

Heh, I keep forgetting this is a site for kids. A lot of the forums I used to go to were rather hostle, and I was seeing some of that hostility in the Redrum side of the pond, so I responded to that. While I apologise for my own aggresive tone, I'm not recanting my earlier statements. Redrum's a spooky game, but anyone who says it's scary or shows a child being tortured needs a good... erm, anyway.

I'll try to be a more friendlier fishie.

I decided to buy this to relax after playing BFG "ECHO: Secrets of the Lost Cavern" and "Sherlock: The Awakened". I finished ECHO and am still working on Sherlock. Spend more time in forums and walkthroughs than playing the game. They are both very hard and Sherlock is way more gross than this game and I am only about half done. I think BFG is doing the right thing, trying to have something for everyone. That's just good business. No one says you have to buy a game that offends you. I like the puzzles in this game. It doesn't mean I would go out and hurt a child.

If the game says it's not suitable for younger players, that should be the biggest hint of all, plus it's in red letters that you can't really miss.
And I've played a few chapters and it's not upsetting to me at all. But then, I'm 21 and watch many horror movies, so nothing that can be released on this site could ever be too upsetting.

I certainly wouldn't recommend the game for kids under 13. The images and subject matter might be a bit much for someone under that age. But then again, there is much worse on t.v.s across the world, so it's up to the parents to decide if their child can play it, but I see no need to complain that it's too violent or whatever. Just don't get it for your kid(s) or yourself. There are still other mature people on the site who have no problem with the game at all.

I thought it was a fun game and played and played. I didn't find it too violent. I can pick up a paper and read the news, or watch the news, or watch a program on tv, or watch a movie to get even more violence if I want. It looks like it takes place in the 50's and then a Lobotomy at that time was very common. But think about the story line. Its fun to see a scary story and run with it. Not everything is peaches and cream. And then there is the big red warning. I have played so violent games and find them fun. In game, its supposed to be make believe. Like movies. Fun, scary and full of myth.

I've only played the demo so far and have a love/hate relationship with the game. I think the story is good (the diary and email segments are somewhat reminiscent of the fragmented style of the original Dracula by Bram Stoker) and the visual style is creepy as promised. I like games like the CSI crime-solving puzzlers so the gross-out factor doesn't really bother me. Yeah, the murder methods are quite messed up but watch a few episodes of CSI and it's not quite as disarming?

The hate side of the relationship comes in that I'm a sissy and get creeped out really easily (I had a hard time concentrating on the inkblot puzzle). Yes, Halloween was a blast, thanks for asking. /end good-natured sarcasm. But honestly... I kinda found it to be a unique experience. My instinct is to not look and ignore it (that's how I deal with my serious phobia of Halloween decorations)... but because this is a hidden-object game, you -have- to look.

Who knows... maybe it will be good for me!

But I think 'too violent' or 'too creepy' is really subjective. It's violent... but not too violent for me. But I watch CSI and my favorite movie is Silence of the Lambs. It's creepy... and it's edging up on too creepy for me. And you still couldn't pay me to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark.

What creeped me out was that the evil doctor looked horribly like Harold Shipman the Yorkshire doctor and serial killer.
