If you are having problems getting the game to work correctly, we highly recommend going to our Help pages. Using our Help pages is always the quickest way to get technical problems resolved. Here are a few suggested articles that have helped many people correct these types of problems in the past:
Frequent Crashing of Game
Game Compatibility
While we can offer a known solution for technical issues in the forums, or other tech savy pond residents can swim by with good tips and suggestions, we cannot provide the same excellent level of support provided by our Customer Support team. The forums are not very well suited for the kinds of information gathering and troubleshooting that get these types of issues corrected quickly. If there is a problem with the game, our Support Team can also gather necessary information on what types of computers are being affected by the problem and deliver this information to the developer for a fix.
If you are not able to get a game working properly using our Help pages, please get in touch with our Customer Support team, you can find a link to contact our Support team on the front page of our Help pages.

The game starts in windowed mode, and the option for Widescreen (which I have) doesn't change a thing. The option "Regular" stretches the picture, but then it is cut off on the left and the right. Also the graphics look rough/unclear then.
And on testing = switching to and fro, I saw in one of the start screens (1st or 2nd into the Opera) that there were 1 respectively 2 candles to the left.
So, don't know whether "Regular" would be the 'real' widescreen option or whether also items would be cut off in the H O scenes.
ETA: I did find the items in the 1st H O-scene, the closet-room to the right, but that might have been luck cos they weren't on the edges; the red curtains on the right and left were definitely cut off.

@Tinytater3: I guess the refresh rate is out of range for your monitor. Reinstalling the game will not help you here (unless there is a new version). This is something you will have to do in your display settings.
One problem could be that the selected monitor is wrong and allows rates that your actual monitor does not.
This problem depends on the resolution, so it will more likely occur with a game that uses a higher resolution. I think that the resolution of 1024x768 should be supported by your monitor, but not with the same refresh rate as a lower resolution like 800x600.
This is usually not a problem of the game itself and in the worst case can be handled by additional tools. Maybe the CS can help you here.

Have you tried updating your video card drivers?

@Tinytater3:: Thanks for the nice feedback, I'm glad I could help.
I already have a job, though.
And while they might not know a solution to everything the CS seemed quite capable to me for the times I contacted them.

When I tried to play the demo, I suffered the dreaded blinking/disappearing cursor issue that I have experienced in a handful of games in the past (among those, Sweeney Todd and the first ML Sleepy Hollow games). However, after attempting a few adjustments in my display and mouse pointer options, I fixed it!!! This is a big day for me and anyone else who has ever dealt with this frustration (and those of you who are sick of me whining about this problem!). If you ever have this issue, try this - In Personalization-mouse pointers-visibility-deselect the display pointer trails option. Seems like such a little thing, but sure enough, I deselected this box, tried the game again and voila! a blue gloved hand appeared!!! Now I need to go back and try Sleepy Hollow, Agatha Christie games, and all the other ones I could never play due to this problem. I hope this helps others who have also had this problem!

Hey catherine58,
This particular error message can usually be fixed with a quick update to your Direct X software. Please take a look at this help article for those steps:

I can't get the demo to work, and have learned my lesson about buying something before I demo it. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled, and get the same thing--the icon is in my toolbar below, but the game won't open. If I click "play" again, it says a game is already running.
Something similar to this happened happened with the Christopher Columbus game--I could never get the demo to play, and that was because the game was incompatible with Windows 7.
Anybody else have this problem?
PS, I also have a fairly large monitor...
Update: after incessantly clicking the game icon, I finally got the demo to start and it went all the way to the end--great game. I'm still nervous about buying it though, because of the start up issue.

I unfortunately h ave several problems with this game...
1. I too cannot see the side if I deselect "Windowed mode". Wide screen does nothing. "Regular mode" cuts off the sides and I loose part of the field of view for the game.
2. The cursor will sometimes only work if I'm ~.75cm below the object I'm trying to click
3. The first hidden object scene had none of the words visible in the list. If I moved my cursor around the list then the shadow oject appeared in the little hint window but the words were all invisible.
4. Another weird thing in the first **** scene was that all of the objects in the scene were the color red. I have had something similar happen in another game I demoed - Sweeney Todd.
I'm very sad that this game is unplayable for me - what little I got to play/view of it was lovely and I've read all the great reviews. Bummer!

First of all, I would like to say that I was able to complete this game and absolutely loved it! I thought I had picked the best game of the month with "The Black Cat", but Phantom of the Opera beat that by a mile! Best game I have played in many moons... thank you BFG! Superb, and reading the novel for the first time in extras was a real treat!!!
Now the two problems I experienced:
1. In all the games I have downloaded, I have never experienced a problem with flickering screen and flickering mouse pointer until this game. I had to play the game in "windowed mode" to resolve the problem. I kept my resolution at my own 1680x1050, instead of changing to 1024x768. As far as I know, my drivers are up to date. I would love to know what would resolve this problem for my XP operating system, as I would like to play the game again in full screen.
2. Even in windowed mode, every time I open and continue game play, I get a warning from my Symantec warning me of High CPU Usage, once at 88%, once at 93%, and once at 94%. This is the first time I have ever seen this warning on my computer, and cannot imagine why on earth this is happening. I make sure I don't have any other programs, internet or email programs open while I play this program and open from the icon, not from the game manager, so no other programs are running, except hidden icons in the taskbar. What on earth is up with that? As I said, I've never experienced the High CPU Usage warning with any game or program before.
