help! broom not soot-blackened!

[Post New]by Angi1994 on Nov 17, 10 11:58 AM
ok, hi everyone. I'm stuck. I love the game, but I'm in the Vatican and I'm trying to figure out the safe combination. I pulled a feather from the feather duster, but my broom is not soot-blackened, so I can't use it on the paper, or use the feather with the broom and then on the paper. Did I maybe do something wrong? Did I forget to do something? help!

thx anyway

You may be missing some thread from outside. You need to tie the handkerchief to a branch so that you can clean the soot off one tile above the fireplace.

You have to look at the tiles in front of the fireplace too and clean them with the broom to see them. That will soot-blacken the broom.

Once you've cleaned the upper tile, you can't use the branch to press it ...

thx 4 answering so fast. but I've done all those things, and I'm afraid I can no longer get to the other side of the fireplace. it's after that cutscene where the shovel breaks, u know?

Are you trying to re-open the door then to wedge it open?

The broom will be soot-blackened if you've swept the tiles below.

You're confusing me.
What safe? I thought you were trying to open the door by pressing the tiles above the fireplace.

no, I've done that. I've talked to the Cardinal, he's gone, and I want the combination to open his safe. normally, I'd pull a feather from the feather duster(did that) then use the soot-blackened broom on the paper with the combination, then the feather with the paper and I'd get it, right? well, my broom is not soot blackened, threfore it can't be used. any ideas?

Ok. Here's where I'm lost. You had to clean the bottom tiles with the broom so that you could read them for the order to press the top ones. That would have got soot on the broom.

ETA you have the right idea but your combining order is wrong.

Can you go back to the fireplace then? You seem to have skipped a step getting the tiles done.

I told you, I saw that cutscene where the shovel I've put to keep the passage open breaks

Then I think you will have to go back to an earlier saved game and make sure that you sweep the soot off the bottom tiles.
