stuck at the fountain scene the mail box and unplug fountain please help

Oh help - the wretched dial will not go between 300 and 350 degrees. Is there any way to bypass this puzzle - I have wasted 20 minutes on it which is really annoying if you know what you want to do and the game will not do it ?
