Go to the Start button on your computer, then "All Programs" and then "Microsoft Update". I updated from there.

I get stuck before even leaving town. I had done everything in the town and Oscar awaited on the train...got the approval and headed for the church just for the heck of it - hadn't been before...got punch cards, went up an elevator, saw "something missing", went back down, headed for the front door of the church. Clicked on it and the avatar went up the steps and...disappeared, leaving a hollow, infinitely-repeating sound of footsteps.
Tech support, here I come.
C.
Edit update....poot. Downloaded Dx9 anyway just to see...still no luck. Pooty-poot!
Edit update 2 VENTING: Live chat in queue position 36...a bit more than one hour later, position four, then "No agent available, chat cancelled"...immediately tried again - position 41...argh argh
Edit 3/update - resolved without BF chat after waiting another hour - little did I know Invidia released a new driver for my video card since last Monday (which is when I normally check for those). Talk about bad timing! Anyway, works fine now. Shoulda checked that first off!

This also happened to me but I updated DirectX & disabled my virusware & since then it's been working fine.
I remember having to disable my New Verizon Online Protection to play MCF's Madam Fate. I just ended up getting rid of it because it was just a month's free trial and it was messing up a lot of my games. ????
I've finally gotten her down the steps after getting the egg and up the other steps and I got the error message. I haven't done the online support yet since I keep reading it's such a long wait. I've updated everything and the only thing I haven't done yet is uninstall and reinstall the game, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. I'm just so frustrated with the game.

Oh gross-o-rama! DirectX up to date (9.0c). DXDIAG says "no problems". Got 64M video memory. All drivers up to date. No firewall (if some hacker wants to launch a denial-of-service on me, my advice is "get a life"). No other programs running. And playing merrily along, got the egg and whammo - hard freeze on the way down the ladder. And of COURSE it's the weekend. I did save just before ascending the ladder, so I'm poised once someone gives me the next voodoo idea to try LOL

Of course, right after I finish the part that froze it I change it back to high detail because for some reason or another it will crash if I don't...Lots of bugs in this game but it sure is fun!
Okay, I'm about to try this, but when I did it before (earlier problem, resolved with new vidcard driver) I had to reboot the PC per the game's instructions. Your description doesn't include that step but I'm assuming you rebooted, right?

Have the same problem at the same spot as everyone else. Once I have the egg and come down latter the game would freeze. Downloaded the new directX like BFG says to and not at the same spot it no longer freezes, it gives me error message "access violation at 0x7C911E58" and then shuts the program down. Researching this game on the internet I found that this game has problems running on Windows XP or Vista but BFG lists it as it can be. It can't be just my problem if so many people are having the same problem at exactly the same spot in the game. I am very very upset that I paid for a game, get half way through it and find out that you can't finish it.

Don't give up! ...I'm on XP(SP2). I finally got it to work and seem to be progressing nicely. I had updated my video card driver and downloaded DX9.0c. Based on another poster's advice, I went to options and reduced the depth to 16 colors and turned off anti-aliasing (even though by rights my machine should be able to handle it - I can play Oblivion no problems!!)
Anyway, I restarted the game and got yon egg and was on my way to the Uni when bang! another screen freeze. That's when I posted the question to BFGErie because the game says you have to reboot the computer while the BFGErie advice says reboot the game. Okay, so I rebooted the computer with the new, lower settings. Now I've been playing for a few hours and I've had no problems.
Sounds like the infamous memleak might be striking here...without specific instructions on what to clear out, perhaps rebooting is the only way to goose the game back into running. I think the other upgrades are probably nice and make the game run more efficiently, which means a longer time before the memleak whacks the game...so my advice is reduce the settings, reboot the PC and play, but save early and often in case you have to repeat the reboot! Good luck.

Did you try what worked for me?
Make sure you have the latest DirectX. Make sure you have the latest driver for your video card.
Set the options to 16 for depth and "no" for anti-aliasing. Reboot the computer.
I've finished the game with no problems since I did those things.

Yipee!! Cracked it. I've been stuck at the same spot exiting the station with the egg. Tried all the DirectX updates and reboots but no luck. Decided to save the game when she's at the top of the steps by the stationmaster (safety precaution) and then changed the game resolution to LOW. I then made her walk to the exit doors to the point just before the cursor changed to the highlighted scene-change mode, and then walk her through the door - I usually make the poor woman run everywhere. This time it worked - hope this helps. It's a brilliant game and I hope I eventually make it to the end ????
