Don't understand the "mines" puzzle

[Post New]by SharonGia on Oct 26, 12 9:02 AM
It's the one where you have to click to clear out the dirt around the mines. I don't understand how to figure it out with the numbers appearing around them, I keep clicking mines.

Help please.

There is an element of guesswork that can backfire, and it grows worse with each puzzle. However, some patterns of numbers do definitely locate mines for you. Here is an example (X means either a blank or another numbered square)
XXX
X1
X2
X1
XXX
The only way the "2" can have two mines touching it is by putting one mine to the right of each "1". because any other solution would mean two mines would be touching one of the "1" squares - and "1" means only one mine can touch it. Ergo
XXX
X1M
X2X
X1M
XXX
Hope this helps a little in seeing how you can deduce where mines happen. Sometimes though it just comes down to guessing on a 50-50 location - which I inevitably guess wrong on - I actually bought my way out of a few of these because they got so frustrating. The puzzle construction was clearly not intended to allow completely logical solutions.

Yeah I managed to guess my way into finally solving the first mine puzzle.

When I got around to the 2nd one, after a while I just gave up and paid the money to get out of it. I like a challenge but this one sometimes gets too frustrating.

Same here. I know it's basically Minesweeper, but I can't figure that game out either.

When a block says "1", then that block can only have "1" mine touching it.
This is touching left and right, up and down, and diagonally.

so here is a scenario: (on a border)
1, 2, 2, 1......
/ M, M, /

so each "2" would have a 2 mines touching it.
each "1: would have 1 mine touching it.

if a block says "3", then there are 3 mines touching that square.

x x M M x
x x 3 x x

LOOK: see there are already 2 mines touching the 3.( up and UP & right)
the other mines can be up & left, across left, down & left, down. down & right
& right.

so if you get a scenario where you have
x x M M x
x x 3 M x

then you already have 3 mines touching the 3 block
so, you can clear
up and left
left
down & left
down
down & right

the trick is to REALLY pay close attention to the diagonals.

Also, it helps to randomly click several blocks to start the puzzle, recommend doing it on a border.

I understood how to play it, but two different times I had all the squares showing either numbers or mine flags, meaning that I did not hit a mine at all, yet nothing happened. I had no other open squares to either "dig" or place a flag on, which I would think would mean I had solved the puzzle, yet absolutely nothing happened. After doing this twice, at 2 different times in the game, I gave up and bought my way out of all the rest of therm.

www.minesweeper.info/wiki/Strategy has extensive images and info for beginning, intermediate, etc. levels that anyone checking this thread might find helpful.
