balcony scene with tent

How do you cut the strings to enter the tent? I have gone over all the steps and searched for something to cut them and can't find anything.

Does anyone else have this problem and if so, do you know what the item is?

There is a great explanation of what you need to do in the free Detective Quest: The Crystal Slipper Walkthrough:

Zoom into the tent; put down the GRADIENT (M) and play the mini-game.
Cut the threads in the sequence N-W to complete this mini-game

I hung the gradient but have nothing to cut the string with. I no longer have the clippers. What do I cut the strings with???
