how do you get past the engine that won't start and the lights that won't light?

I'm guessing you're at the generator. Make sure you have the light bulb and the gas tank from the previous screen.

Yep! Gotta have gas can (2 screens fwd) and the light bulb (one screen fwd) try this sequence. Wait! I just threw that solution in the trashcan. ah! yes! Here it is!
Try 3 to 8, 1 to 4, 5 to 7, 2 to 6, & 9 to 10.
