Large File Adventure Games don't have trials. You may find a demo on the developer website.

Why would I pay for a game without a trial available? The answer is, I wouldn't. Ever. Never. Not. No way, no how. I can't understand why anyone would. What if it turned out to be terrible?

Because that's pretty much the way it is. If you play casual games such as these offered here you are in the privileged area of a 1 hour trial or a demo version. About 95% of "professional" games and supposedly 100% of console games that expect you to shell out 60 bucks for them don't offer demos.

How to find out if they are any good? That's what game review magazines are for, or reviews on the web.

In case of the Nancy Drew adventures, as Mr. Russ said, there are demos available for 6 games at the developer's website. Since all ND games are roughly the same, it's a matter of "like them all or don't like them at all" once you've played through the demos. Unless a game's topic doesn't strike your fancy.
