Pick up hammer

my game will not let me pick up the hammer in the engine. She only walks toward it and turns back around. I cannot get into the baggage car crates without the hammer. It doesn't show up in inventory. What is up? How can I get her to pick it up?

You can't just take it. Talk to the engineer. (You have to swap it for something).

I too can't get the hammer, spoke to engineer still nothing what do I give him, tried to give him pliers, still nothing ,can not move on....helllppp please?

it's a leather sap from one of the briefcases.
