Can I move some of the BFG games onto an external Hard drive?

[Post New]by rentonwa on Jun 25, 08 6:26 PM
I'd like to move some of my games (the onces I've finished and don't want to play for a while) onto an external hard drive.
Is that possible, BFG? and if so, how would that work? Would I have to have the "My Games" box on each hard drive? I hope someone in your technical department can help with that.
Thanks!

Rentonwa, I started out copying all my old files to the external drive and would bring them back over if I wanted to play them. Then someone posted on the old forum about using the Mozilla Firefox browser to download (rather than IE), and ever since then, I've been able to download ALL my games to my external hard drive! You can set it as your default download drive. By the way, whoever you were (and if you're still here), THANK YOU for the valuable advice! Let me know if that works for you, will ya?

Gina - does that mean I can't use IE anymore? My husband uses Firefox and I don't care for it. I like I.E. Now if I could have both browsers I may want to go that route. And, would ALL my games play from the external hard drive? Does that make the games slower?
How did you copy your files to the external drive? If I just move the old ones over I would get more space for new ones on my c:drive. That's actually all I was thinking of. But, may I should move all my games and play games from the external drive - hmm?
Thanks for the info, Gina.

"Squidward" (he he), I actually still use both IE and Firefox, the only time I use Firefox is for downloading. Only the games I downloaded to my external drive PLAY from the external drive, the others on my internal hard drive aren't affected in the least! And no, they don't run ANY slower than those on my C: drive. In fact, I'm playing HE Amazon from the external drive. Anything you have copied over (rather than downloading directly) can be played from the external drive, but you won't be able to use your desktop icon to get to them, you have to go into "My Computer", then to the external drive (usually E , then find the correct icon in the corresponding file for the game. TRUST me, it works great! Just use Firefox for downloading only, and be sure to set your external drive as the default download drive, and you won't even notice a difference!

Glad I could help "Squidward", but like I said, I can't take credit for it. If that "angel" I was referring to earlier is around here somewhere, PLEASE expose yourself, you were a great help to me, and obviously your knowledge has been passed on! Let me know how you make out, rentonwa, will ya? I hope you have as much luck with this valuable information as I have!

This sounds as if it would be a good option for me. I have had 2 crashes in the last few months and I lost all my games. Big Fish were so kind allowing me to d/l the ones where I had used my limit! (Because of these crashes)

I will contact my SIL who builds my computers for me, and suss that out

You say that you copy the games over? Can you give me more details on doing this please. I'm computer savvy in most things but want to make sure I know what I'm doing.

TIA... Patti

Patti, I just did a simple "cut" from the C: drive, then "paste" to the E: drive. Couldn't use the desktop icons after that, but I could still play them if I went into "My Computer", selected the E: drive, looked for the game I wanted to play, then clicked on the appropriate "executable" icon in the file. Since BFG allows you multiple downloads, my suggestion would be to just re-download the games (using the Firefox browser as I stated earlier), then go from there. The desktop icons work fine if it's done this way.

Hey Patti, congrats on the great-granddaughter's birthday! I've yet to become a grandmother, but with boys ages 25 and 22, can't be far off (although I would prefer to marry them off first)! Please let us know what your SIL has to say about all this, he may be able to simplify many things for us here! Share the wealth, that's my motto!

I agree with you, Gina - why not share the wealth? It feels good to share information and knowledge and it feels real good to receive it when you're stuck yourself. So many games I couldn't have finished without the help of all the great people here.

Hmm....Maybe BF could come up with a second manager that could be downloaded the an external hard drive....I have never had to contact Tech Support but maybe will float that idea by them...

As an outgoing MSN Group user I would use the term "bumping up" this thread - however my PC is Vista and not the largest hard drive in the world. I have a nice external and had often wondered about storing - I have uninstalled many games I have paid for - figuring if I really wanted to play the original Cake Mania or Janes Hotel I could download it again (technically I do own the game via game club credit). However having them on the external drive would certainly save me the downloading time and effort. Because I have uninstalled them, my only choice would be fresh downloads. I have an old old laptop downstairs still on XP (SP3) and I do also download to that - sometimes running different games on both. Having all purchased games on my external would be way cool.

Just my but checked with a few people who bought and had an external hard drive and used fire fox (I personally don`T like) and they crashed all their data.from it so it is a deffinate NO for me. I have a Acronis program that backs up all puter and recovers ,also delete all BFG after I use them as I have 5 times to re download, like to keep my ram freed up and memory clean. But everyone has there choice.so if it works go for it.

Just two weeks ago I had everything from BigFish games moved over to my external hard drive. I did not have to use fire fox, I still use IE and have no problems whatsoever. You do have to change the Game Manager drive to E and then one by one redownload every game to that. Once that has been done when you get a new game and it asks you to run, you instead "save" and then next popup window, also "save" and then next two windows you "run". I have had absolutely no problems with doing it this way. Hope this helps you.

You should be able to right click on the game file (.exe) and create a copy on the desktop.
