Gaining 3 stars with Xero Sum |

Ok, I must be dumb, but how on earth do you reach the 3 stars rating needed to unlock the next band, while you're playing with Xero Sum? I finished the story long long way to get the 3 stars... do I have to buy better instruments? Do I have to keep on playing like mad even if the story is over? How did you manage to reach 3 stars in time with the storyline?
