can't get glue out of tube to repair stairs and can't la the wood planks down

what is the trick to getting the wood glue out of the tube to repair stairway? And how do you get the boards to fall in Place?

Put the glue tube on the first broken step and click it twice.
Then click on a board.
Move the glue to the next step and repeat.
