Disappointing Facet... |

My biggest disappointment thus far in what could be a fantastic game is the lack of consistent physics. The original was very formulaic and analytical for me: you line up a shot, and if it works, and you know EXACTLY how it was lined up, you could reproduce those effects every time.
This game, however, seems to change the rules on a whim. I line up my first shot, fire the ball, and it follows one path. If it misses the ball bucket by a tiny bit, I line it up again THE EXACT SAME WAY on my next turn, wait that extra split second, and fire, knowing that the ball should follow the same path and hit the ball bucket precisely. It doesn't, of course, it will take a random rebound, go a different direction, and miss the ball bucket by a full screen length. There aren't variables like wind and temperature to deal with, this should be a simple "if you aim at this precise spot, you can predict where the ball will go every time" experience. But sadly, even something that should be truly predictable fails to be so. And yes, I am aware that some of the peg formations move very slowly. The level that is giving me the most trouble does not have moving pegs (Bjorn Identity). Try this yourself: line your first shot at the very edge of the lower first brick in the outer curve of the left half (his left) of Bjorn's mask. Use your arrow keys to move it back and forth to make sure it is one tick away from striking the edge (the dotted line will go from a ball to an arrow). Notice where the ball bucket is. Fire away. Keep track of where the ball ends up in relation to the bucket, as well as what pegs it takes out. Now, try to reproduce those same results. I have yet to have two shots in a row go the same path. Why? I am doing everything the same each time, and there are no variables to account for. The moving of the ball bucket should have zero impact on the movement of the ball until they come into contact. Yet the same exact set up yields different results each time. Not fun, especially when you're trying to beat a level with only 2 balls. Edited on 03/22/2009 at 7:53:44 AM PST |
