How do you tell exactly what stage of the game you're in?

I've just found all the things and get the blue arrow on Gear 4. I have a gear in my inventory but when I drag it over to where the blue arrow is it dings and the gear moves back into my inventory so obviously I'm missing something. When I click on hint it highlights the gear where the blue cursor appears so that's no help.

BobbiJean, if the gear you have is brown, you need 4 of them. If you go to the Amazon forum, you see this thread: Beetle Temple: Animal Door/Gear Puzzle. There are also several other "gear" threads. Good Luck.
