And I didn't even know this existed until today...Battle Match 3.
Okay, so I saw where windrose had found this game for her grandson - Puzzle Hero.
I thought, Battle Match 3? What the heck is that?
So of course I had to look at it...and try it...and buy it...and now I want more like it!
So okay, all you Match 3 fanatics - which ones are "battle" ones, so I can feed my new addiction?

Try Spandex Force as well.
Oh, and if you want to do a Battle Match 3 against a human opponent, try Puzzle Pirates and the sword fighting or rumble puzzles.

Puzzle Hero is great and I LOVE Match 3 Battle games!
Sadly, this is a genre that doesn't seem to get much attention and folks above listed all I know:
Puzzle Hero My first Match 3 Battle, played it non-stop till the end
Puzzle Quest (never got to play this, for some reason will not play on my computer)
Sea Journey i LOVED until I got to the end and the last Battle is a Arcade Style click-fest that takes no strategy, and I can't do fast click stuff. So if this is not an issue for you than *highly* recommended.
Mean Girls - not great, but good, and nice customization and play nice or mean aspect on power-ups.
Carribean Hideaway is not a Battle, just a standard Match 3, but a very good one if you don't mind timers.
Have not heard of Spandex Force, will now go hunt it down.
Also, a different sort of game but one that might appeal to you is Bookworm Adventures. It is similar in structure but basically playing a turn-based Boggle-like word game against oppnants. If you enjoy word games give that a try.
Sure wish developers would release more of these. I think it is an untapped market as it adds a level of thought to Match 3s, which I tend to find a bit boring, or too stressful (or impossible) with Timers.

Speaking as a developer, the biggest headache with writing a "battle" type single player game is writing the AI - how to make the opponent hard enough without making him too difficult. My company develops multiplayer online games, and quite a few of those end up requiring an AI opponent for when you can't find somebody willing to play with you.
Speaking as a player, when I play single player games I don't want an opponent, but that's probably because I have to help test all those multiplayer games that I help develop, and I'm burned out on them now.
edti: eeep! I mean WOOF! what happened to my nice whiskers?????
