Actually, there seems to be several endings possible. The placement of the knobs on my boat was totally different from the above postings. The key is to look for the symbols on the boat. For moon, square, star, & circle placement (left to right knobs), look for carvings on the boat that have those symbols in them. All will have at least the symbols you're looking for (moon, square, star, circle) and an arrow. Some of the carvings look like equations with a combination of numbers and symbols along with the moon, square, etc. Ignore any numbers or other marks and turn knob whichever direction the arrow points. For example, one of mine was 337-9*= with an UP arrow. Ignore everything except the symbol (star) and the direction of the arrow (UP). For the last knob on the right (heart) look for a heart carved into the boat with a number. For example, it will show = 3. Click the heart knob equal to the number carved behind the heart on the boat. It is necessary to turn on all 3 switches before you start and as the other posts indicate, it isn't necessary to do anything else. As soon as you click the heart knob the appropriate amount of times, the boat will automatically start.

Thank you - this is actually the first post here that helped me get off that friekin' island, lol.

You have five symbols to set, and three dipswitches to press (down).
heart = 3 = -> (arrow in clock position 3).
What are your symbols with numbers (if they don't have arrows)?
What are your symbols with arrows?
One of my settings was <number>
Did you change your dashboard light from red to green?

I finally got it started. I set all the knobs to 12, turned off the switches, and exited the game. When I came back they were all at 6! I left them alone.
So, I turned on the three toggle switches.
Then I set moon at 3, left the square at 6, set star at 3, set O at 3, turned the heart 3 clicks and--nothing.
Then I set the square at 12, and the boat started (I might have clicked the heart three then it started.)
I did not have to use the green button.
I had tried 3-5 times and exited to look at the forum.
I noticed that the meter was pegged and over the right Red area towards the end. No, my PC didn't smoke.
Peace...

That green object isn't a button, it's just an indicator light. You have 5 dials and 3 switches to set before the boat moves.
It doesn't matter if you do the switches first or the dials. The indicator goes green after your first choice is complete (making this a lot easier if you do the dials first).
