Hot knife won't cut vines

Just started the game and already have a problem. The HO in the first room of the house wants me to cut the vines with a hot knife. I'm unable to do so. The guide says nothing and the hint button keeps pointing to the knife and then the vines. Someone help please

Collect 2 pieces of code to place on wall near vines, collect typewriter buttons, put in blank piece of paper and you will receive 3rd piece of code.
You now have the order in which to cut the vines.

Except (at least when I played it) the order is completely different (42351, IIRC). However, good old trial & error works - once you have the code, just keep clicking on the vines until they disappear!!

I was splashing along and noticed that there was some trouble cutting the vines with a hot knife. Talk about frustrating. Definitely doesn't make the game fun.

I see that dippydebby and bobhillman offered great tips that an order needs to done to get the vines to disappear. Thanks for the great tips! I'm going to summarize the tips below:

1. Collect 2 pieces of code
2. Collect typewriter buttons
3. Place on piece of paper
4. 3rd piece of code will be received

3 should actually be "place paper in typewriter".

I admittedly stand corrected. I should have said, place paper in the typewriter.
I bought this game and have really enjoyed it so far.
