A Very SIlly Question..

Does anyone remember how the Hints work?

I select an object and a silhouette appears in the hint box. If I click on the hint button, Ithe screen get turned into a graph with numbers across the bottom and letters up the side. I suspect something is supposed to show me which little square the item is in but nothing happens. I used a hint for the same item about 8 times & still have no idea where it is.
