well, you have to use the coconuts but in a hurry you need to get the dam built so that you have the garden to use for food before you run out of coconuts. So send all you villagers (make them builders) and send them down to the dam area to build the dam. keep at it til it's done cause they will die without it and you may need to use the kids to get mushrooms until it is built.
HAVE FUN!!

What Jackie says will keep your villagers alive until your villagers can accumulate the 90,000 tech points needed for level 3 Farming !!
Now keep in mind this garden + coconuts + mushrooms (and benevolent random events) will maintain less than 20 villagers.
 Good luck

I have been reading the forums, on how to set up the dam, by making everyone builders, and then putting them where the dam should be. ( is that the skinny part of the water that goes in between the two big ponds?) well, how long before they get it into their heads, that they are suppose to dam it up?
Also the algae problem? How am I suppose to get rid of that?
Ok well they also made a stew, why doesn't that go to the food total.
what are the butterflies, and the other things like the shells, what does that do?
I feel so stupid..

after you finish the above info, I took a master farmer into the pool to look for algea eating fish eventually figured out you need to get alot of algea eating fish out of the pool. keep putting your master farmer in the pool as long as he is looking for the fish

Forget the algae problem until you get the dam built and water to the garden plot. Once they farm there they will have an unlimited food supply without the fishing. As soon as the plot is ready to plant, get the scarecrow made as fast as possible or the birds will eat your first crop in a hurry. You take an adept or master farmer up to the vines above the science table and to the right to get twigs and branches for a scarecrow just above the plot. I think there are sparklies around there. Takes 2 trips but goes fast.
I've had children keeping a whole tribe fed in emergency with mushrooms, and the occasional red ones are 50 food points. Takes a lot of observation on your part. The butterflies and collectibles bring in big tech points. First one of a kind no points, then once part of the collection, duplications get from 100 to 250, even 1500 tech points. Soooo if you aren't against child labor keep them all busy! They can really save a day. And it takes a LOT of points to get L3 farming for the algae.
I would buy higher tech Science before L3 farming because the higher the level the more tech points on each task. One villager and kids can usually keep the tribe alive with food, and I put everyone else on Tech.
There is a real good walkthru spoiler at the game maker's site LDW dot com, (Last Day of Work) which helps with what task to to first, next, etc.
btw the coconuts do reappear at some point but only 30 at a time so watch for those to replenish.

so my next big question is how do I get rid of the algae?
I fulfiled the butterflies, next is the shells. But I don't get what they do?
HELP!
If you collect extra Butterfly's, shells, ext. You gain Tech Points for the extras.
