Is there a problem with the store/spells?

We love the game! My wife had two questions for me which I couldn't answer:

1. She is up at level 100+ or so and has purchased the third level of everything in the store. That said, the store space to the right on the heart never filled with anything. Was there supposed to be something there?

2. In a (possibly) related question: She has one spell she never, ever has seen become active. It is the second spell from the right. There is a symbol there - but it never is buyable, and she (and I) have never been able to activate it during game play.

Any help would be... um ... helpful!!
