Not offended, but definitely annoyed. The outfits and poses were gratuitious, adding nothing at all to the story except eye candy for adolescent boys. To me, the outfits completely detracted from the atmosphere and mood of the period. Frankly, this is one of the reasons I did not buy this game. After the prison break (as another poster mentioned) with them standing around looking as though they were on a street corner waiting for business, I stopped playing. Ridiculous.

I was offended, however, by having to kill the wolves in the beginning. I know they were 'evil' wolves, but it hurt nonetheless.

All around, this game was not for me, although I know many people enjoyed it. To each his own, I guess. Glad we have so many choices!

And P.S. regarding the comment regarding what is offered in stores for young girls, this sort of objectivization of women in games, cartoons and TV shows contributes to the demand for sexier clothing at a younger age. Parents need to be vigilant, and stand firm when their little girls start whining that "everyone" is wearing this.

I agree. It detracts from the game. Loved the nature artwork, and the storyline is good. Not the best, but good. I enjoyed the game, but would have enjoyed it more with less skin showing - and the heels were just ridiculous. I'm sure living in the forest the way these ladies did would have not have allowed them makeup, much less the S&M clothing. Please, if you want that kind of thing, patronize a place that sells that to get your kicks. Let the rest of us have a nice game we can share with 10-year-olds and 70-year-olds, and not be put off by the skin factor. Stop shoving it down our throats when we don't want it. The message should be that women are strong, and yet still feminine, without being sex objects. That is real equality.

I play the games with my mom or sister and although anything sexual I wouldn't discuss or show her I find nothing is offensive on big fish that I couldn't play with her except for Mystery Case Files Return To Ravenhearst where she had trouble with most of the game and I admit myself too as it was grosser than usual.

That being said she loves the dark parables games and isn't offended at all. I don't find the clothing offensive but I do find the girls to be too "cookie-cutter" for me. There should have been one who is 46F-30-44 or one who is 6' 5" or something. I beleive orphaned girls comes in all shapes and sizes. I will admit when you open the cell and you get those big breasts in your face that is a bit much.

I think the initial post here is offensive though as for all we know the person who designed them are girls or maybe a girl who's fantasy was to be like this. Remember it has to appeal to girls and girls like all this fancy gear.

htbhills wrote:Interesting topic. I tried the demo and loved the game, but personally felt annoyed with the "manga" style clothing and poses of the female characters. It's a first for that game developer, I believe, and I was dismayed to see it. I live in Japan, and to a certain extent manga is associated with teen (or younger) porn. I really dislike that look myself, and I think that the OP is right to mention her annoyance with it.

I really and truly appreciate that that particular game developer often creates strong female characters. I would hate for the ridiculous manga look to become a staple in their line-up. I won't buy any games that look like that.

Sorry.

The company Blue Tea is in Hong Kong...if that hints at an answer haha.

This was an interesting post being that when I first started the game my mind immediately went to the attire Ruth was wearing. "Fierce" was my first thought. Then "Oh geeze where's her pants--oh, barely showing above the high thigh boots..." Now, to answer the question as to if I was offended--no. I mean, why would I be? I was actually happy to see that the majority weren't anorexic like most of societies "ideal" female models. The characters were actually fit and thicker. And perhaps the stilettos were a tad far fetched, but did they look fierce? H'yes! But the rest of the attire....come on...women during that period breathed cleavage, whether it was appealing or not. So, I found it rather empowering if not taking sketches (cough cough).

Look at it this way--is it ANYTHING like what female celebrities or performers wear in movies or music videos?

And I know that someone mentioned they did not enjoy the "manga like" animation and live in Japan where it is mostly associated with teen porn. Okay that may be true, however, not ALL manga should be disliked because of this factor. If anything I believe the style Blue Tea art is better than some manga I've seen/ read.

Overall, I don't think we should focus on the (minor) negative (also depending on one's perspective) if the game was overall outstanding. I mean, when I saw the previews for Sucker Punch...I wanted to "sucker punch" the director for making women look like nothing but street walkers :/ I actually watched it to find that the movie was...incredible--BUT (before you chew my head off) I still didn't like the attire for the women. It turned into a minor issue as time went on but, I enjoyed the film. At least the fight scenes anyway haha.

Hm Chumface,
I wondered what the latest response would be to this old question. And know I see what you don't see as I have a magic reveal glass left over from a recent game.

I'm not exactly offended, but when I first saw those heels, instead of noticing the fabulous artwork, I was thinking - hey you can't be a warrior in those heels!. I think it's a distraction. The artists were being lazy. You can be sexy without high heels or a bodice so tight you can't breathe. Thigh high leather boots aren't a bad idea in the woods (leather would be good protection) but girl - put some pants on.

You know if yo ant to get realistic then the woman wouldn't even be in the forest in the first place let alone fighting wolves. That type of thing was frowned upon. A woman was meant to be at home taking care of the husband and family, it was the husband/father/brother's job to take care of the female.

So how's that for realism.

I am a female and take no offense to the costumes. I can't understand why you assume the developers are all young males in their 20's just because the images are sexy.

Can't older guys be artists or game developers? Can't women appreciate the female form (Even if they are not Lesbians)?

I personally find your bias about who drew them to be more offensive then the costumes themselves.

Oh and I'm not worked up over it either, just adding my opinion.
