LOL, I was starting to think my game was glitching since I knew I'd spent nearly all my money before trying a level, but after I failed I'd have both enough money to buy stuff and also the items I'd originally upgraded for the level I failed. This info is good to know.

I don't know if this is correct, but I read a couple of places that if you have the upgraded version of CM3 (don't know the number) they fixed the save to main menu "glitch" (so you can make more money for upgrades). So later versions, you may not be able to do this. In my mind that is not a fix. I would have never gotten to the 6th location w/o that tip. And I still can't get through level 9.
Try, try again. I guess I like to drive myself insane.

This still works! Also you don't even have to fail the level. You can pass it and before the "Save and Continue" screen pops up, I go to Menu, then click Main Menu, Save Game, then go to Play and Continue, where it takes me to the shop and I got all the money I earned, and still play the same level over again.
So I chose a level where they all want the same shape cakes, and I make $730 every time. I got 3 Ultimate Ovens and Frosters in no time from doing this! Thanks for the tip!

Check this out...
If you fail a level, don't click "restart".
Instead, click "Main Menu".
When it asks you if you want to save your game, say YES.
Over write the last save that you have.
From the main menu, click "continue".
When you get back to the game, you'll wind up in the shop, with all the money you earned from the failed level - it gets added to what you had before.
Keep failing? Keep repeating the steps above, and you'll soon have enough money to continue upgrading your equipment.
This really helped me get through a screen I though would do me in. Now I've got lots of gold shiny stuff in my shop! 
Don't ask me how many times it took me though, k? LOL!
