Comments:
Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allen Poe Conspiracy is a dark mystery set around the life and works of Edgar Allen Poe. This game has some amazing artwork and level design, and the gameplay never left me wanting. The controls are smooth, and the mini games have enough variety to keep you on your toes. The storyline is engaging, taking you through both the events of Edgar Allen Poe’s life as well as several of his tales and how they may relate to his ultimate demise. You are led by Poe himself through all of this, in ghostly form. You will also meet the shades of a few of his literary characters, whose stories may be closer to real life tales of terror than anyone realized. Midnight Mysteries appears to be the first in a series, and if the rest are as good as this first one, I am definitely interested in trying out the next!
Genre:
Hidden Object, with some puzzle elements.
Game Modes:
Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allen Poe Conspiracy contains an untimed mode only.
Depth:
This is average for a Hidden Object game. Prepare for several hours of gameplay.
Similar to:
Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allen Poe Conspiracy is close to Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst and the Treasure Seekers series.
Difficulty level:
Excellent for newcommers and experienced players. Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allen Poe Conspiracy isn't too difficult to frustrate, but it still provides a challenge to the seasoned player.

Ok, super quicky review as we are actually doing something outside the house tomorrow (NO! ) and I gotta get to bed.
Initial impression after playing a little over an hour I'd guess is this is a good one. Excellent (if a bit dark) graphics, super cool story (love Edger Allen Poe and this is based on the real theories that he was murdered), good music. Obviously dark in tone as about a murder, or rather murders. Not gory tho.
Now about the Timer... not sure if there is one...? The game screens themselves have no timer but supposedly you are supposed to solve the mystery in 24 hours and as you exit there is a watch with time counting down. Someone who has time to play longer than I do atm can hopefully explore this more.
It is a junk pile Hidden Object, but things pretty easy to find and *mostly* make sense. (Um, microphone in Poe's time? Don't think so.) Puzzles are fun but so far very easy. Inventory puzzles are cursor change based but also logical. You've found a key so you look for something with a lock, yeah? Pretty easy but fun. Find ravens for extra hints, click on list names to see silohouette of object. Click too often and a creepy cat (the one eyed cat from The Black Cat! How cool is that!?) scares away your hints for a few seconds, no biggie.
I was concerned this was going to be super short as the opening chapters went very fast (based on walk-thru scan for length) BUT it seems now that I'm in the meat of the game as it were it's slowing considerably. First Poe story I'm investigating not done yet and I spent abt 40 minutes on it so far. There are 3 stories you "travel" to. Not gonna be super long but I imagine I'll make my 3+ hour happy place.
Ok, not so quickie after all... Anyway, a cautious (not played far enough and concerned about possible over all timer) Poodlebear Approved!

It's rare for me to play the full hour of a HOG demo. I did on this one, which I didn't expect as I'd just finished Enlightenus. I'm due a game credit on 20th and I'd been planning to hoard my credits for the next promo. I may use it to buy this instead. Definitely a good one.

I just finished playing the first mystery. (There are 3 of them) Where some parts were easy others were not. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it kept my attention without the mystery. I bought it immediately after playing my demo hour - which btw seemed to fly by.

I'm with you Eisteepfirsich - I loved this game too, but had to set it aside for awhile. It's like a good book, can't wait to get back to it!! I even enjoy reading the storyline.

I just finished the Demo and bought it. I have just begun the Mystery of Marie Roget (actually based on a true story). The graphics are very good. The game play is not difficult even in the dark places. If I can see it, you probably can too. The graphics have enough humor to offset the gruesome topic so it shouldn't be too scary but has just enough chill to be fun.
Find the Ravens for extra hints. In one case I used up my Ravens but soon another one flew in and sat on the cage. I guess that means they will renew in time even if you don't find any ravens. If you have Hints, you do not have to wait for a refresh to use them (I am pretty sure). I used at least two in a row near the end of a scene and did not have to wait for a refresh. This is great! Funny how the Devs of games where I need less help make the help easy to get while Devs of games with near microscopic objects make me wait at least a minute to get help no matter how many Hints I have. Why?
Poe is a favorite author so I enjoy playing a game based on his works. Was he really murdered? I don't think so. Sadly he died of alcoholism I believe. An addiction that was destructive but may have led to some of the greatest horror fiction and poetry of all time.
I look forward to continuing the game and am hoping that it lasts at least 3 hours. Does it have replay value? It will have to play out the same but the object lists might possibly have variations. I am fairly certain I will play again once I finish. After the 2nd play I may not play again for a while. Good game! Four out of five stars! No, I don't think I will ever rate anything 5 stars. there is always something that could be improved
