"Sherlock Holms has failed" message

I just got a message that "Sherlock Holms has failed his mission, try again". He was laying down on the floor...looks like he was dead. Then it blocked me from continuing anywhere. I had to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to return to my computer screen. I have had no end of trouble with the game cutting out on my or mostly not allowing me access to the program at all (black screen)...It occasionally works, but my oh my. I am only doing this game because I got the Nintendo DS game and am working them both at the same time.
