frustrated (stuck near the beginning of the game)

Am I the only one finding this game to seriously lack direction? There are few indications of what to do next - and the ones that are there (i.e. go to Thais at the very beginning of the game) immediately lead you into an area that is wayyyy to hard for the level of the team. I keep going back and leveling up, and trying to do another area first, only to keep running into the same problem. Even with good armor and weapons the monsters are so much stronger than the characters that I'm finding it difficult and frustrating to make any progress in the game.

If anyone would mind giving me a few hints to get me going I would really appreciate it. This is where I am:

- I have rescued Iya and gone down through town and gotten Rye to join my party.
- Been to Thais and got the letter for the princess.
- Leveled to about 20
- Talked to the woodsman, captured the beast, told the town (hector) about it (although they didn't seem to do anything about it - do I need to follow up?
- went to Grimm farm and found out they don't have any animals.

I know I am supposed to deliver the letter, but the brightwood forest monsters are so difficult that I can't get through.

I have played and enjoyed all of the other Aveyond games, the jury is still out on this one.

Yeah, leveling up more helps immensely against the beasties in Brightwood Forest and you have to go through there to get to Candar....The good news is, leveling up makes Ean and Rye stronger fighters and Iya learns more powerful spells. And the extra gold you pocket can be spent on better weapons and armor as well as more potent mana restoratives and better food.
If you owned Grimms' Farm wouldn't you stock it with your own animals?....
You might want to go back and check up on that poor beast you left caged with no one to look after it....

After struggling so long with Aveyond 1, Ean's Quest was almost a vacation, lol. Give it a chance, they all grow on you.

At around level 20 you should manage to get through Brightwood Forest to go to Candar ok. And after you're back you can go to the greystone pass, which by then should be a doddle!

I actually used the Greystone pass area to level up for Brightwood plains... well the outside part anyway. The rats inside were not very nice to me.

Rats ? Piffle ! I hated those ugly little vipers and stepping in Cyclops poo was not my idea of a good time, lol.

Is it because you don't know what to do or you can't outrun the beast before you flip the trap switch?

I must admit.. it took me several tries to get that dang beast to fall.. sometimes I wished my son lived closer to help me out but alas.. I eventually got em... I was even thankful you can save any place you want in the game and aren't forced to use save points.
