Mata Hari

I have tried, very unsuccessfully, to download this game. All I can see when I try to play it is a gray scree. Well, let me back up a sec. I click "play now" on Big Fish, it loads. I see a bedroom, then a blue screen, a black screen, and finally a gray screen with the "Play, Puzzles, Exit" choices. Thsi is the only game I have this prob with. I've played almost every Nancy Drew game, almost every MCF game, a lot of games, no problems. Until this one. And I really wanted to play it

I am having trouble with my mouse working too.

I hate ALL the reading....I do like the part where I can choose her outfits.

I guess I'll pass this one.

I am going to swim over to the Game Community and play Unwell Mel.

I only played about 15 minutes of if then un-installed it. I didn't find it interesting at all. Sorry BFG, this one was not a winner with me, nor me it. I'm glad I only tried the free demo copy and didn't pay for it, waiting to use my next credit for one I'm sure I'll like, even if it has no demo.

I didn't like this one. It was more like "find the sparkles and then let me walk you through the game". I didn't think there was any challenge in it. Not one for me. I will wait for something better. I would like an Old Fashioned HO better than this one.

I haven't read all the posts hear - too many. I wish this game had it's own forum. I like it a lot, but am stuck on the safe dials - can any-one help?

For those working on the pipe puzzle. On the pipes themselves. there are a number of dots. One dot goes on top, and one on the bottom and follow thru with the dots. Hope those help

For those working on the punch puzzle. Look at the folder and it tells you what to do.

Nothing like talking to fast as playing with puzzles. I am now on level 4 and I've run into a problem. I have to find part 2 of the german map. There are sparkles on the german symbol bag as well as the other bag, I think it is italian symbols. the first puzzle map piece is also all sparkles. Any ideas on what to do?

WTG! Grace and Welcome to the pond!

I didn't like it. I spent 20 minutes on that danged punch card until I figured out, by accident, what I was supposed to do.

The HO items were often too small to find on my own, so I had to rely on the sparklies when I got near them. I don't like that -- I want to find the items myself.

By the time I figured out the game, my 60 minutes was up. I don't think I would have liked this one even if it didn't come out after RTR.

I like this game, very fun. I love all Nancy Drew games and any like them (they're my anti-drug lol - tho I didn't care for the last 2 and I only thought the dossier was so-so) I also liked Murder on the Orient Express and find this game ruins in a similiar vein, though it's probably closer to the Nancy Drew Dossier series. I might add that I HATED The Hardy Boys game. I ended up quitting, which is too bad, because it looked like an enticing plot line. But it was hard to move the characters around and I never had any idea what to do next...

Anyway, I'm stuck in Mata Hari! I'm down in the secret cellar (after speaking with the butler) waving the lighter around like a mad woman trying to figure out what to do next. What do I do?! Please help!

I am usually picky about games.
I also have problems with some games working on my PC with Vista ( ).

*I downloaded the Mata Hari demo - no problems.
*I played the one hour demo - no problems.
*I figured out the punch card thing right off, but it would have been nice if I could open the code book again since I didn't know I needed to memorize the code because I would never see it again.
*I usually hate to read (anything), but I will read this story line as I play. I did not read any of the dialoge during the demo because I wanted to play as much game as possible.
*The game has a lot of pop-up instructions in the beginning, but seems to lessen as you play.
*I made it to level 4 in the hour demo. Only 14 levels, but if I read the dialoge along with playing the game, it should be a 3+ hour game. Any game over 2 hours is worth $6.99 as long as you are enjoying the game.

I like the dress up part. Now I just need to figure out what outfit will turn on the 25 year old aviator. Every outfit I pick out isn't right according to Mata Hari. How 'bout I just strip her naked with a few well placed pasties? That should do the trick.

Sexist? Not really. Mata Hari..... you go girl! I mean she was an exotic dancer & prostitute (with very small breast - especially by todays "big is better" trend). She also was not as deep into spying as everyone might be led to believe. I think she did a few minor spying jobs for the French & Germans (double agent). Most of it was media hype.

I think I am going to buy this one. I kinda enjoyed it. *Shock*

Mata Hari (1876-1917) was the stage name of the Dutch exotic dancer and prostitute Gertrud Margarete Zelle, who was shot by the French as a spy on 15 October 1917.

Born on 7 August 1876 in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, Mata Hari's name has since become synonymous with espionage, although it remains by no means clear that she was guilty of the spying charges for which she charged.

The daughter of a well-to-do hatter, Mata Hari attended a teachers' college in Leiden before, in 1895, marrying Captain Campbell MacLeod (of Scottish antecedents but serving in the Dutch army). They lived together from 1897-1902 in Java and Sumatra.

Returning to Europe together they thereafter separated, at which point Mata Hari took to dancing upon the Paris stage from 1905, initially as 'Lady MacLeod' and soon after as 'Mata Hari', the name she retained until her execution.

Highly successful in Paris (among other cities), Mata Hari's attractiveness, as well as her apparent willingness to appear almost nude on the stage, made her a huge hit. She cultivated numerous lovers, including many military officers.

Still unclear today are the circumstances around her alleged spying activities. It was said that while in The Hague in 1916 she was offered cash by a German consul for information obtained on her next visit to France. Indeed, Mata Hari admitted she had passed old, outdated information to a German intelligence officer when later interrogated by the French intelligence service.

Mata Hari herself claimed she had been paid to act as a French spy in Belgium (then occupied by German forces), although she had neglected to inform her French spymasters of her prior arrangement with the German consul. She was, it seemed, a double agent, if a not very successful one.

It appears (the details are vague) that British intelligence picked up details of Mata Hari's arrangements with the German consul and passed these to their French counterparts.

She was consequently arrested by the French on 13 February 1917 in Paris. Following imprisonment she was tried by a military court on 24-25 July 1917 and sentenced to death by a firing squad. The sentence was carried out on 15 October 1917 in Vincennes near Paris. She was 41.

To many she remains the unfortunate victim of a hysterical section of the French press and public determined to root out evidence of a non-existent enemy within, a scapegoat attractive as much for her curious profession as for her crimes.

I never got to actually choose her outfits -- I just clicked on the right arrow until the game chose the one it wanted. There was like a sniper scope that came up in front of the person's picture when each correct piece was chosen, and after the third piece there was a lipstick "kiss" mark.

There is a lantern on the wall, about mid-screen if I recall correctly, maybe a little to the right? If you drag your lighter to it it will light the room.

The mini-game puzzle for this room was one of the hardest for me to figure out what to do and I looked at the instructions, which I avoided doing when at all possible cuz I liked figuring out what to do myself. Words to live by: Click Everything and watch what happens! That one I needed a little help.

I'm wondering if maybe under hard mode you get to choose. I played easy first time out. Have one chapter left, been savoring it. If not, than this aspect will kinda dissapoint me. I would have liked to try, based on the clues, to put it together myself. I fancied myself a bit of a fashion diva costumier in my younger days.

I am stuck in the green lounge. Both the hookah and the pipe humidor indicate something is needed but I can't seem to find the "something."

You were in easy mode. In hard mode, you have to find the right outfit.

I am getting close to the end but have hit a snag. I am in the Green Lounge where there is a body on the floor and a photo of the Taj Mahal on the wall. I have found all the regular items and am ready to deal with the "Something Needed" part. Alas, apparently I need to use this round, filter-like item that I have but it cannot be moved. The other items, including the footprint and a Taj photo can be moved but they are not what is "Needed". I have uninstalled and am about to reinstall. Hope that fixes the problem. This happen to anybody else?

BTW, to any Mod out there, when are you adding this thread to the All Games Forum? Seems that this has been overlooked. Thanks!

First, thanks to scotcat for directing me to this thread. Now I'm really in a quandry over whether to get it - and I only have 6 min left in the demo.

2nd: mice. Sorry so many are having mouse probs, I have Vista, a wireless Logitech mouse, and none of your probs ... Thanks to poodlebear for info re game mice. I haven't made much progress in Hoyle's Fairy Races cause I can't control the mouse; maybe one with on-the-fly control changes would help.

3rd: PC maintenance (also relevant for Macs ?). Several fellow fishies have been asking about screen/slow probs and here are a few suggestions from a non-geek.

a) How full is your harddrive? My old PC would bog down whenever the drive started filling up. I think you need at least 10% free space.

b) How organized is your harddrive? Every now & then it needs a defrag. My geekier spouse suggests I batch my file deletes and then defrag. If I delete demos as I finish them, then new downloads get fragmented, making the PC work harder and possibly contributing to read/write errors.
