switching out of game without exiting

I just started this game after finishing the awakened which was excellent!! During game play, if I get stuck, which is often, I use tab/alt to go to forum but when I switch back I only get black screen. That means I have to start all over again or completely exit game. Anyone with a solutiom for this?
