Need recommendation for toddler product

[Post New]by sillyfeet on Oct 23, 09 7:37 AM
All of you with little ones...do you have a recommendation for a doorknob cover that is designed to keep little ones from opening doors. We have the safety first ones...the ones that you open up and snap around the doorknob and there's two holes on either side for adult hands to grip the handle and turn it. Only problem is my 3 year old has figured out he can defeat them by sticking his finger in the holes and yanking to pull the cover apart. Today I got out of the shower to find my door wide open and my son wandering around the street. (And yes I went running out in the street in my bathrobe with my hair dripping wet like a crazy lady)

We do have a chain lock that we can put on the door but it needs to be drilled into the door and we don't own the house; we only rent. I suppose we could ask our landlord for permission but.....any suggestions on doorknob covers in the meantime?

I don't have any suggestions on a product, but wanted to say that this has happened to me before too. I was in the shower and my then 2 yr old got through those door knob covers and was out hiding in my car stuffing his face with chocolate! I mean chocolate was everywhere. The construction workers were fixing something out front and rang my doorbell. I was so worried that they were going to call social services I threw clothes on and left and went to Lowe's and bought 4 additional latches and put 2 at the very top of my back and front doors. Was very scary so I know how you feel. I felt so awful. I'm glad you got to him though and nothing happened. I would just ask the landlord about installing the latches. I think these kids are trying to give us heart attacks!

I put alarms on my doors. Worked for my kids. You can usually find them pretty cheap too. I think mine were Safety First brand and you can get a two pack for $10.

I don't think the landlord would have any problems about this. It would be a safety feature. Child-proof gadgets!!!!! The children figure out how to undo them quicker then the adults!!!! I know the feeling of terror when you find your child has gotten out of the house; hair-raising; heart-stopping. It's a wonder we make it through child-rearing.
In my day(back in 60's) they didn't have these gadgets; had to lock yourself in with key in pocket to make sure no-one escaped! We tied cupboard doors closed!

I forgot about those alarms. I tried those TWICE lol, but I think I got faulty ones or something. A friend of mine had them and they worked great for her, anytime the door opened a loud buzz would be set off so she knew one of the kids was up to something. Unfortunately for me, mine constantly went off... when noone was near the door. So after that escape I had no choice but to pull out the drill and put the house on lockdown.

I have yet to meet any child safety feature designed to protect a child; defeat a child. Not even one child.

By 15 months they're able to pull the plug covers out which is just at the stage you need them the most. They're able to open the cabinets. I don't care if it's the ones you open the cabinets slightly then push down on or the ones with the straps you have to push buttons on all three sides to open the door. The refrigerator door locks, the toilet safety locks. Even child safety caps on a medicine bottle. When you can't get one off, hand it to a 2 year old they'll be able to get it off in a heartbeat. Forget window safety locks burglars may not be able to get past them, but I'll guarantee you, you'll have brought 5 set by the time the child is 3.

If you find one that does as it actually claims let me know and we'll nominate it for the only actual child safety device that works. What we had to do by the time our oldest granddaughter was two and have had to keep up was buy the cheap .97 cent chain locks you can buy at Wal-Mart or Home Depot any home goods type store and put those at the very top of the door one for every door including the bathrooms. 2 cheap screws for the windows, that in case of a fire we can open just enough to lift up and out, but that they can't open enough to climb out.

Edit to add: This is also what we did for our own children and their safety. 20 bucks you're done till they're in school. Advised by our own parents and how they protected us. For our grandchildren we thought spending $100's of dollars was the way to go. Pfft.

We had chains on two of our doors and both ended up being ripped right out of the bracket that was fastened to the wall. Needless to say they didn't work. I couldn't use the bolt locks because of the trim around the doors. And I couldn't find knob covers because we have weird shaped door handles. The alarms worked great for me.
