What is the purpose of this game?

I don't think that this game delivers much challenge, and I am rather disgusted with the fact that only one player can play this game. Why do we need to purchase stars? I want to start at the beginning to see if I missed something in the first part of the game that would answer this question. I am so sorry that I purchased this game.
