Tattoos

[Post New]by Smallhaven on Oct 1, 08 4:45 PM
With all the discussion over accessories, purses, shoes, jewelry, there is one thing I "wear" every day. That is my tattoos. I have six currently and the seventh in design. I spend years in decision as to where the piece will go, what it means to me, and finding an artist who does ink.

Currently I have... two roses entwined on my left shoulder, grinning sun on right shoulder, circle of wild roses on the neck, abstract Phoenix on the right calf, sprawling bluebells on the left breast, and a talisman on the left ankle. The seventh in design is the family badge with some of the crest incorporated.

So there ya have it. Do you have any ink?

Not me. Some of them are beautiful and I've thought about it, but saw too many really bad one's when I worked in labor and delivery. You wouldn't believe what some of these young women put on their bodies, most of which I can not say here!! I remember one doc who called me in to see a delivery of a baby from a woman who had decided a brightly colored flame tattoo should be what her baby saw first, regardless of which way it looked, if you get my drift.

I was 47 when i got my first tattoo,a small rose on my right shoulder, i dont think i would get another though. My dad was a navy man and i remember this tat of a gypsy lady on his left bicep ,when my dad got old so did she. alwasy wondered who she was. he was quite the ladys man. One year though i went to the national tattoo show in san fransico (my home town) with my son who has several tattoos, and wow talk about some beauties. they were just so artistic and beautiful.

I have a heart with a lightning bolt going through it and little stars, flying off, like sparks. It's on my left one.

Got it while celebrating graduation from Basic Training.

I actually have a dagger on my upper left arm .. Technically it was supposed to be a dagger with a snake wrapped around the blade and then splits into two heads.. one on either side of the hilt. A dragon and a snake. This whole thing was supposed to go through a skull with ruby red eyes. Alas I only have the dagger.

I actually want to get it touched up and some color added. Plus a blood drop added with my dads initials

I'm thinking about getting a yellow rose on my upper right arm that spells out my mom's initials since that's her favorite flower.

I remember when getting mine...when the guy started doing the shading on the hilt.. I started bleeding and he was like "I didn't give you permission to bleed!" Oops.. Didn't hurt at all though.. Was more like a gnat biting LOL

I'm not generally big on responding to non-gaming related posts, but had to on this one. I am indeed tattooed. Just on both my arms for now, but both forearms and upper arms/shoulders. Most a little hard to describe as they are just sort of swirly, though on my right theres a fish, bees and stars woven in (it's a long story ) and on my left I have a big flying cat on my upper arm and shoulder that actually covered up my fisrt tattoo which I got in 81'-ish? (before it was in fashion) because I read an article where they could be used to cover scars, which I had. It was a little pagasus fairy looking thing, very girly, very childish, so it didn't really suit me later on. The cat I designed with my tattoo artist and was much more me. Finally on my left forearm I have an angel holding a "Remembrance" banner that was for my Father who had just died and my Brother who had died a few years earlier. I don't regret this one, BUT I would probably design it differently had I done it when in a clearer state of mind (I litterally got it like the day after Dad died). Someday I hope to have a big flying pig across my upper back. I've always considered that kind of a personal totem as living my life as a disabled person (I have Musular Dystrophy, was diagnosed at about 5) I have done so much people said I couldn't. Ya know, "when pigs fly?" I've done a lot of flying.

i have one for now.

it is the japanese symbol for heart with a small red heart woven in, it is on my lower back
some people would call it a tramp stamp

but not me, i got heart because that is what hubby calls me.

i want at least one more, but priorities mean i must wait.
plus i want it to be white ink and there are not too many places that do that.

tattoos are a lot more expensive in the states too... i got mine when i was living in England

I have one tattoo. It is a dream catcher on my left shoulder blade. I got it december 15, 2003. it was a couple days after comming back from iraq. I was having bad dreams and getting it helped. I feel dippy because I often forget that i have it.

Hugs to all

Interesting reading the reasons and symbolization associated with our ink. Like looloo, I grew up with a father in the Navy who has his arms tattooed. His first one was a skunk titled Lil Stinker and he had it done when I was born. Growing up with tattoed men in the family and married to a guy with tat's, it was inevitable that I'd have ink someday. Much to my mother's chagrin.

The entwined roses was my first and I had it done to celebrate the love between me and hubby. Yeah, I know, smarmy. His quick action dialing 9-1-1 saved my life and I wanted to do something to honor that. The second was the grinning sun and that was chosen to symbolize how I live each day with crippling disease. Those are the only flash I have. The other four are my design.

The wild roses commemorates my one grandmother who taught me the Old Way's. Her courage and determination in all things still rings true to my heart to this day. I actually slept during that tat while a guy in the other chair passed out from the pain. I really enjoyed designing this piece. Each sketched line seemed to have the hand of G'ma in it.

The blue bells on the left breast was for my 44th birthday. The doctors did not expect me to live that long so I designed this piece to symbolize the sprawling strength in my spirit. The bluebell was another grandmothers favorite flower who lived a hard life but never lost hope.

The Phoenix, again, designed and done for health reasons. I had already been extremely ill with two near-deaths and against all odds, survived. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes so had I. This large piece on the right calf shows the world that I am a survivor.

The last tat is the talisman on the left ankle. The reason I had that done was to keep me safe during hospital stay's. Having my corded talisman removed during hospital stays or by EMT's, I felt I needed one permanent. That no one can remove. The elemental pentacle is perfect for that. So even if I forget to bless myself before leaving home, the talisman is there to protect me.

Thank you to all who replied to this thread. I love the art of ink and am fascinated by the process. Amazing medium for an artist... the skin.

I currently have 3 tats. I am a huge Stevie Nicks fan, so my 1st tattoo is a white dove inside a tambourine with a red rose in it's beak and says Bella Donna under it. My second is the emblem for the 4th infantry division with Anthony on it, I had this done before my Son was deployed to Iraq. The third is a tribal with Jeanne (heart) Shaun- he is my fiance. I want to get a fourth with my Daughter Stephanies name, I just haven't figured out where I want it. I try to keep them so they only show when I want them to.
Love my ink!

Both of my boys have tats. They love them. I always wanted one but never got that far. One day I may get one. Never to old for change of some sort. I had a friend that had her eyebrows tatted on.

I think my problem is I am really terrified of needles. Being a diabetic, it's odd I know.
