Shorting my torches

I had collected 5 torches, left the game to deal with housework, came back and they were gone. In the last 5 HOS I visited, I collected 3 more. ONLY ONE IS IN MY INVENTORY!!!!!

I understand the slowness of the game but why are my items not registering in my inventory?
