cant open suitcase when enter code 1487 no luck, anyone else had the same issue?

Can't quite remember exactly, and would have to play the whole game again to find out but-
the strategy guide says to use the suitcase code on the suitcase, and then type in the code 1487.

I assume this means that you get a bit of paper or something with the code written on, and you can't enter the code correctly until you have used this code note on the suitcase first.
So just wondering if you were typing in the code without having used the paper (or whatever it is) first.

There is also the possibility that once you have entered the code there might be a clip/clasp e.t.c on the suitcase which you have to turn/open.

I found that the code didn't work until I walked down to the first room I had entered, then it worked.
