...............
When the lady left the park in the evening she drove off with
a dog on her left,
the possum on her right
and the lorrikeet at the dash board. Fantastic.

Today I went east of Mareeba a bit to visit Emerald Creek Falls Nature Park. Had a nice walk in mountain area and the walk was great. Waterfall lovely too!

Tonight l’m staying again in The Granit Gorge Nature Park caravan park. I really like it here!
Loads of rock wallabies roaming aroud all evening.
Last night one jumped in the back of my van!

Lovely sunny days again.

The lady who runs the park was so interesting en entertaining, just she was worth coming for.
She had a few cages with birds in them: galahs and several different cockatoos. Good opportunity to make good pics of them.
She also had 2 bright colored lorikeets, the ones I’ve seen so many off picking the ripe mangoes. She had them as pets. Voluntary they were hanging out in a little cage. More pics.
One of them came around with her sitting on her shoulder, so cute.

And last but far from least: she had a baby possum. Raised it when mum got run over by a car. What a cuty-pie that was. Never saw a possum so close. Cute little hands, looked a bit like baby hands, but longer fingers and very long, sharp nails. Back feet similar, but a very fleshy, broad ‘thumb’, to climb the trees easy. Cute little head, and the big brown eyes looked gorgeous of course. Sweet miniature nose. And a long, strong tail. Bottom looking like leather. When I padded it, the possum would curl the end of its tail around my finger, a very powerful grip. Very interesting.
It loved to be on the ladies body, preferably on the shoulders or right on top of her head! Fantastic. I held this possum for a while and it crawled round my back, in my neck, sniffed at my ears and up to the top of my head.
Never had an experience like this in my life. Very very nice.

Wednesday November 25

Mareeba. Welcoming signs along the road..
Where the Rainforest meets the Outback and 300 days of sunshine a year. I like that one!

Yesterday l made some touring plans. My first trip was to The Granit Gorge Nature Park, only 12 km. west of Mareeba. What a wonderful surprise l got there. Lovely park plus a very peaceful caravan park, with electric and internet connection. Immediately I decided to stay there.

There’s wonderful rock formation and a little river running through, making little waterfalls in all these rocks. a swimming hole was there too (no crocks). Beautiful.
Plus: an abundance of rock wallabies. Only small, 25 -30 cm. when they sit up. But roaming around everywhere. In the park office they sold wallaby food (they got special lisence for that) and I had a great time sitting on a huge rock feeding them. They eat out of my hand!.
While they came so close, I could make excellent pictures of them. The best, of course, from a female with a joey. She sat on my side so calm I could take a picture nearly in het pouch, joey having a big back leg hanging out. Wonderful that was! I spent a lot of time there.
Watching also this female getting bothered by a male who wanted to mate. When she finally got rid of him, the next male came along immediately. What a hard life / poor female.

Jaq,
Mummy,
Whippet
thank you for your replies.

Mummy, l don;t see the point either of throwing money in these machines who must be electronically programmed.

Whippet: that's something.. make you drink more when you win.
